USF Football

The USF football (University of South Florida) program seems to have suddenly come out of nowhere.

In actuality, it really has come from nothing in a short 11 year span, which is infancy for football programs.  Teams like Alabama and Notre Dame have programs that date back over 100 years.

Where is this School?

First, let me clear the confusion of many people on where the University of South Florida is located.  The name of the school incorrectly suggests that the school is located in South Florida.

It is not.  It is actually located in Tampa, FL which is geographically in Central Florida or more specifically West Central Florida.

There was recently an article in the Tampa Tribune describing how the university got its name.  You can read that article here.

USF Football History

The USF football program began in 1997.  The program began as a 1-AA independent.  The program has changed conferences over the years as follows:
  • 1997 - Began as 1-AA Independent
  • 2001 - Moved to 1-A Division Independent
  • 2003 - Joined Conference USA
  • 2005 - Joined Big East
Over the years the USF Bulls (as they are also called) have established themselves as a national power, ranked as high as #2 in the AP poll in 2007.

Since joining the Big East conference the University of South Florida Bulls football team has surprised many.

They won their first victory against a Big East team, Louisville, in 2005. Louisville was ranked #9 in the nation at the time.

To say that USF beat Louisville would be an understatement.  They embarrassed them with a final score of 45-14.

There have been a few other notable upset victories for the USF football program in the program's short history:
  • 2005 - Defeated #9 Louisville 45-14
  • 2006 - Defeated #7 West Virginia 24-19
  • 2007 - Defeated #17 Auburn 26-23 in overtime
  • 2007 - Defeated #5 West Virginia 21-13

USF Only Head Coach

The USF football team has only had one coach, Jim Leavitt, for its entire existence.  He has done an extraordinary job during his tenure.

In fact he was receiving many invitations for head coaching vacancies from big name football programs across the country in 2006. Instead, he chose to finish what he started at South Florida.

Since the South Florida football team joined the Division I-A in 2001, he has led them to finish 5 out of 7 seasons with a winning season over .500.

They had an 8-3 record their first year.  Their records since that year are as follows:
  • 2001 overall record 8-3
  • 2002 overall record 9-2
  • 2003 overall record 7-4 (joined Conference USA)
  • 2004 overall record 4-7
  • 2005 overall record 6-6 (joined Big East)
  • 2006 overall record 9-4
The University of South Florida Bulls have also made 2 Bowl game appearances since their inception.  They appeared in the 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl and the 2006 Papajohns.com Bowl.
  • 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl - NCSU 14 USF 0
  • 2006 Papajohns.com Bowl - USF 24 ECU 7

Tickets and Parking

The South Florida Bulls play at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. This is the same stadium where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play their games.

Tickets are usually not too difficult to obtain.  However, given the recent success of the USF bulls they are becoming more scarce than in the past.

The prices for games range from $20 - $36 and can be purchased
Parking is located at various locations around the stadium.  The price is $10 for cars and motorcycles.

Arrive early to get a parking spot close to the stadium.  If not expect a very long walk.

Just like any college game atmosphere you can expect to see the USF football signature colors Green and Gold all over the place.

Also the smell of barbecue will be in the air as people tailgate before the game.

Here you can find more information for game day policies and procedures.
